I’ve been finding old journals with lyrics to what became Incubus songs and I felt compelled to share this one with you, my reading friends.
The Incubus album ‘If Not Now, When?’ was probably the most trying period of time in the life of this band. We were in such a difficult but necessary period of personal and interpersonal growth and as all of you know, even the most basic of life’s experiences have some degree of pain associated with them. Especially if growth is involved in those processes. But I thank God for these periods of time; as much as they hurt, the things we glean from them end up being watershed moments and ultimately lead to more clarity, more creativity and more Love.
In that spirit of movement and personal growth, here is the lyric to the song ‘In The Company Of Wolves’, which looking at it now, is undoubtedly about a period of time fraught with pain and uncertainty. A kind of “right of passage” as it were, but one that is ultimately survived and the person is born anew from the experience, better and more resilient than they were before.
Thanks all,
Brandon Boyd
still one of my favorite songs on the album..love this!!
In the Company of Wolves came out at such a pivotal moment in my young life. I was barely 21 and had just woke up to the cult nature of the religion I was raised and completely immersed in. My world view and belief system was shattered and I realized that everyone I trusted and looked to for guidance was not on my side. Truly in the company of wolves—so alone, broken, and without a clue as to how move forward.
The entire album takes me back to that time when I play it these days. It feels so incredible to be on the other side—very proud of the life I’ve created as well as the connections I’ve been blessed with after abandoning a life never meant for me. It’s hard to understand growing pains in the thick of it, but reflection of the struggle later down the line is one of the greatest treasures of the human experience.
My favorite aspect of music is how we can emotionally latch on to the stories as if they were our own. It really shows how connected we are as conscious beings sharing life on this amazing planet. I am in awe seeing the lyrics on paper! From the ether, to you, and then beyond!
Thank you for sharing Brandon! The contributions you and everyone in Incubus has made to the world has shaped, sustained and inspired me since childhood.
